Schuylkill River Trail - Valley Forge to Philadelphia

Nice trail but....

May, 2017 by tfk0301

I have been riding this trail for a couple of years now. The trail is flat and puts you along some very nice scenery, river views from Oaks Pa down to the Philly Art museum. The trail connects to Martin Luther King blvd in Phila. which is closed to cars on the weekends, providing a nice wide street to ride on safely, its’ fantastic. It’s nice to go from suburban to urban down into Manayunk and through to center city. You can park at one of the many trail heads along the way and ride a good number of miles non-stop and there are some great places to stop for coffee or a craft beer along the way. That’s the good.
This past weekend I went for the first time this season and I found it getting a bit more dangerous than usuall. There’s quite a few folks out there that have falsely convinced themselves that the Tour De France is in their future and this trail provides their own personal training ride. The trail for the most part does not accommodate 3 or 4 riders across in a safe manner. That being the case there are many times where the fast and furious riders try to overtake slower riders while there are folks coming toward them in the opposite direction creating a 3 across situation on a narrow path. There are also the groups of riders who “need” to ride 2 and 3 across to chat and refuse to go single file when other riders approach in the opposite direction. I have been forced onto the lawn a few times last year. All of this behavior is at best rude and at worse dangerous. I have seen collisions that have sent people off to the hospital that could have been avoided with a little bit of behavioral modification toward the courteous side. If you’re out there “training” you can spare a second or 2 to apply the breaks and or go single file to avoid a dangerous situation.
This site promotes the rails-to-trails conservancy which attempts to raise money for these types of trails. These trails can be great and worthwhile benefiting many people in the long run by promoting a healthier lifestyle that has a cost benefit to the entire society. However if there are accidents that leave people bloody and in need of an emergency room tax dollars and donation support for this will dry up. The trails (this one in particular) could benefit from some signage outlining proper etiquette and behavior. It would be money well spent.

Schuylkill River Trail - Valley Forge to Philadelphia

Saucon Rail Trail

Nice trail; Spring wildflowers in full bloom

May, 2017 by cmaylward

I rode the trail on 5/20/17 starting at Hellertown's Water Street Park to East Landis St. in Coopersburg, and back again (approx 14 miles). Nice flat, wide trail, packed cinder. Lovely spring day with wildflowers in bloom all along the trail. Water Street Park is nice starting point with lots of parking and public restroom. Since there is a slight 1% grade uphill heading south, the return ride heading back north was just a bit easier. I viewed the map online before my ride and noticed you have to ride through Upper Saucon Community Park to pick up the southern section of the trail.

Back Mountain Trail

NOT a biking trail.

May, 2017 by joelkring

The first 3/4 of a mile the trail is very fine stone from edge to edge, after that the trail gets rough. We had to walk the bikes through what looked like a stream crossing the trail. The "steps" near mile 2.25 should be noted in the official description of the trail, not buried in riders comments. There is some nice scenery on the side of the trail away from the highway, whoever even the sound of the stream rushing over rapids could not drown out the noise of the highway.

Susquehanna Warrior Trail

Too close to US 11

May, 2017 by joelkring

The first and last miles are not too bad as far as trail maintenance are concerned, there was also a short section near the middle where some recent work was done. That earned the one star. The trail is very close to a busy highway, except for a section by an active shooting range. I was confused by the signs that read, "Stay on Trail, Keep Moving" when there are new benches there. There were several areas with drainage problems, water flowing over the trail and cutting gullies into the trail. If you just want to be alone this is a good trail, we rode the entire 12 plus miles out and back and saw 2 walkers and no other bikers, not surprised at that fact.

Chester Valley Trail

What a great trail!

May, 2017 by csalaycik

This trails brings me such joy! It's harder going then coming back, but the street crossings are minimal and non invasive, the other riders/walkers are considerate and upbeat. I saw a lot of different types of bikes, recumbents, rollerblades, runners! The grounds are immaculate! You will really enjoy this one!

Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park Trail

Nice trail but best to stay out of Trenton

May, 2017 by rmillanct

The D&R trail that runs along the river is very nice, and it's very cool how it connects to the D&L on the other side of the Delaware River via bridges. We did both of these trails but one of the days we started on the NJ side parking off of US 1 South. We biked down to Trenton to connect with the trail that heads North on the river. Getting through Trenton was neither worth the hassle, nor potential safety issues riding through an urban area with little familiarity of the neighborhoods. Look up Trenton's crime rates and I think you will probably understand what I mean. We actually blew a flat downtown but luckily we didn't draw too much attention to us. There is plenty of biking on both of these trails, just skip going through this area, it's not worth the risk and you are not missing anything. We did not get to ride the other northern section of the V located on the NJ side but from what I gather it’s along highly populated areas, and highways. If you are looking for scenery and quite I think the river side is the best option.

Union Canal Trail

Well maintained and scenic

May, 2017 by jborrelli

Biked this trail last Friday. Nice views of the creek and lots of historical interest along the entire path. The Action Park entrance can get extremely busy during peak periods I started around 4.00pm with two cars in the parking lot and when I returned around 6.30pm there where no parking spaces left.

D & L Trail - Asher F. Boyer Trail (Slatington-Northampton)

Trail's great, but there is one little problem with the description

May, 2017 by soundmind

Trail is one of the best in the area. Surface is perfect, shaded during the summer, runs along the Lehigh River all the time. Here's that little problem, though, and it has nothing to do with the quality of the trail. According to the description on this site the trail continues past Route 329 (a little over 9 miles from Slatington) for a little over a mile or so. You're supposed to make a left on 329, go over the bridge, and take Canal Street In Northampton, then take the trail, again, past the small parking lot on your right. However, once you are on the asphalt trail the first thing you see on your right is a huge sign where they list all the NO's for their park, and on top of that very long list is "bikes." So according to this official sign you are NOT allowed to ride your bike inside the Canal Street Park, and the fine for breaking this rule is only $600. I would advise the TrailLink people to contact the town of Northampton, Pa and clarify this matter. Meanwhile, I would put the end of this section of the trail at Route 329. They actually have a parking lot here, parking lot that does not show on the TrailLink map.
