Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail

Pleasant trail for hiking/jogging but not for a road bike (with thin tires)

September, 2017 by uresh.kuruhuri

I did a ride over a weekend on my road bike from Lock 39 trailhead towards south about 8 miles (and back). Most of the route is limestone and gravel but hard and few patches are asphalt (but they are very rough). On a sunny/dry day, you could expect some amount of dust on your bike by the end of the ride. To me on my bike it is an ok ok ride. However, a mountain bike or a hybrid bike with wide tires would be better suitable.

On the other hand, it is a very good trail for a hike, walking and jogging. The better side is, it is a bit scenic trail for walk/jog. The cuyahoga river runs through the trail and is beautiful to look at all the greenery. I am sure it would be pretty beautiful around fall season.

North Coast Inland Trail (Sandusky and Ottawa Counties)

Very Pleasant Ride

September, 2017 by pcturner0277

I started Labor Day 2017 in Monroeville in Huron County at the City Park below the dam. Its a short ride up the hill to pick up the trail at MM 50.5. The surface is finely crushed stone. The trail goes west stopping on the outskirts of Bellevue. Good signage helps you navigate to where the trail resumes at TR177 or TR292 on the west side. Try to make time to visit the Mad River and Nickle Plate RR Museum.

From that point on to SR105 just outside Elmore its nicely paved. I was expecting it to be all soybeans and corn but the trail was often in a narrow band of trees and made it seem wore woodland than farmland.

The small towns of Clyde, Lindsey, and Elmore were charming and very well kept. You can tell they like their trail.

In Fremont you have to take some public roads. Most are through residential areas. There is a very short section of 4 lane highway (Business US20) but the shoulder is wide and paved. The signs easily guide you through this section.

A very nice trail and you can make a really nice ride by doing all 76 miles from Elyria to Elmore. A lot of the trail in Huron County (Bellevue to Norwalk) is hard packed crushed stone. West of Kipton, leave the trail at Baird Rd and ride north on Baird then west on Bates to Lincoln then south on SR60 to Wakeman. These are very nice quiet country roads. Again the trail becomes a bike route through Norwalk but its not bad. Follow the signs which take you one block behind Main Street with its on-street parking.

Mill Stream Run Reservation All Purpose Trail

The above review nailed it. Not great for cycling.

September, 2017 by jsfarley75

I wanted to at least try this trail as it's one of the only longer trails nearby I haven't done. As AJW said, it very often clings along a road way most of the time. Very little as far as scenery, and lot's of spurs. The constant sound and sight of traffic isn't a pleasant "getaway" atmosphere. My visit was on a busy day during peak hours and it was quite busy. I'd imagine it still being quite populated during non peak hours as well. It serves as an artery for commuters as well. If I lived very near to the trail, I'm sure I'd ride it plenty. Though it's not a great cycling trail to go too far out of your way for compared to other nearby trails like the Summit Co Bike and Hike, or Canal Towpath for example. There's also many busy road intersections. Several of which you need to wait for a cross-walk light. Now onto the better aspects. It's of decent length. It connects to the Rock River trail, or vice versa, to extend outings. Also a spur heading to Parma Heights as well. With many picnic areas, it's good for a family outing that would include a lunch break. It's paving is above average with middle line markings. It's mostly flat with just some slight minor hills. There's quite a few non blind curves which are fun to navigate. Also some blind curves to watch out for. The trail is well kept. I saw plenty of dog walkers, and not one abandoned pile of poo. Overall, I don't see myself going out of my way for this trail again.

Holmes County Trail

Bridge of Dreams to Glenmount

August, 2017 by gleime

I biked the southern most (new) section of the Holmes County Trail from Brinkhaven (where it connects to the Mohican Valley Trail) to about 1.5 miles short of Glenmont.
The trail is nicely paved (10' wide). There is only 1 at road crossing. There are 3-4 roads that we go over high on a bridge. Fencing is being put in along the trail. No railings or fencing at this point on the overpasses of the roads. They're replanting grass along the trail.

From Brinkhaven to heading northerly to Twp Rd 7, it's a long even grade upwards. After you cross Twp Rd 7 it's a steep decline down to Glenmont.

This is a nice shady trail.

Yesterday (Sat 8/26/2017) they were laying Asphalt on the trail. I'm guessing the last section into Glenmont. They must be on a deadline to be working on a weekend.

Also for those that start this trail at the "Bridge of Dreams Trailhead", they have repaired the driveway from Hunter Road going up the hill to the parking lot.

Also there used to be two 5' sections of the Mohican Trail heading towards the Holmes County Trail that was not paved. They have filled one of those sections with gravel. Hopefully they're going to pave that section and the other 5' section.

rode trail end to end

August, 2017 by humpalong

Started ride in Collins and rode east to end point. I then rode west to Bellevue. There is a 4 mile road ride between the trails. I used my phone gps to assist me. Trail is well marked every 1/2 mile. Trail is well maintained. But no skinny tires. My favorite parts are the road portion and bridges over Huron river.

Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail

New to cycling, my initial thoughts of my time on parts of this trail.

August, 2017 by jsfarley75

I'm new to cycling and desired a safe place to ride. Canal Towpath is close to me, so I went.
I've done two sections about 6-9 miles each (one way). First time I was going to start in Peninsula at Lock 29 Trail head. Parking was over crowded there on a Saturday near noon. Avoid Lock 29 as a starting point. Went just south to Deep Lock instead. From there I went about 6 miles southward to Botzam TH. On my second visit, I started at Botzam and went to Lock 3/Canal park Akron. Most of that ride was great. Good trail, nice views and surroundings. Friendly folks in minimal amounts. Saw deer, Geese, snakes, turtles, etc. Only a few street crossings. The not so great part was down near the Mustill Store. Trail had detoured me onto neighborhood roads and a very steep hill for a bit. Got past that, back onto a trail, to then be put back on the road in Downtown Akron. I didn't mind that so much, but had my girlfriend been with me, she would have refused. Arriving at Lock 3 was nice though. There was a Hamburger festival going on with live music and vendors. I stayed for a bit to enjoy, before returning back to Botzam. Overall great experiences on this trail, even with the slight issues around DT Akron and Mustill. I plan on returning to do other more lengthly stretches heading north from Boston soon. I'd like to figure out a way to do the whole thing next season if possible. I recommend this trail do to its over all length. Many places to jump on and do short tours. A couple Bike shops along the way, as well as a couple other points of interest. Restrooms every so often. The Bike Aboard system looks great too. Lots of good stuff about this trail. The good far outweigh any particular bad that you can run into.

Bridge of Dreams to Glenmount

Attempted to bike this trail today. I had read on another web site (can't remember where now) that the trail was 80% complete as of June 14 2017. I thought I would be safe to ride today.

The trail is beautifully paved from the Rte 62 underpass where it connects with the Mohican Valley Trail. The trail is not completely paved into Glenmount but is supposed to be done this year.

They have painted the trail over passes a beautiful white.

They were working in at least 4 different sections today with dump trucks going up and down the trail.

You might be able to ride this on the weekend when they're not working.

I will attempt it again in a month or so on a weekend.

Cleveland Lakefront Bikeway

Great Views

Rode this trail completely for the first time. Great ride. N Marginal Rd that "Rio" complained abt was replaved in 2016. It was smooth sailing. I rode the trail from Edgewater Park to Euclid Beach. Great views of the lake. You bike pass the Rock Hall, Cleve Browns Stadium etc. The ride across the Detroit Superior Bridge was not intimidating at all.

Mill Stream Run Reservation All Purpose Trail

Good For Locals

July, 2017 by ajw

The trail runs through a park with lots of picnic areas. It is paved, mostly flat, and a mix of shade and open areas. There is a river nearby, but you only see it at a couple spots. It is a good multipurpose park trail for locals, but it is not a destination for trail cyclists because it runs right along Valley Parkway most of the way. So you will have cars next to you. Also, you will need a trail map or GPS because there are several side trails and spurs that can lead you astray.

Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail

Massillon to Clinton

July, 2017 by ajw

We parked at Canal Fulton and rode north to Center Rd north of Clinton, then turned around and went to Lake Ave north of Massillon. 30mi round trip. Beautiful trail. Crushed stone most of the way, flat and shady. The trail got a little narrower near Massillon. Canal Fulton is a nice little town with lots of ice cream shops. It also has historic boat rides pulled by horses. Timing worked out that we got to watch one go by.
