Better than the map shows

August 2020
This short trail surprised me; it is better than you expect. Right along the Hudson River and the lock canal, the scenery is beautiful and the little village is charming. Definitely worth the visit.

Hudson Crossing Park Worth Exploring

North of Schuylerville, this trail passes by Champlain Canal Lock 5 and through Hudson Crossing Park, which has about 2 miles of other trails to explore. One leads north between the Champlain Canal and the Hudson River to Eagle Point, with a beautiful view of the dam and rapids below. Learn more at www.HudsonCrossingPark.org. It is worth noting, too, that once you cross the pedestrian bridge over the Hudson, back roads have been designated as the route of the Champlain Canalway Trail as far north as Fort Edward. Most of this route is signed. As of late 2016, this is the longest continuous stretch of the CCT open to the public.

Hudson River bridge is open

If you are distance cycling as I do through Schuylerville, this trail is a welcome diversion from traffic. The 100 year old bridge across the Hudson has also been restored and is open for recreational use only, connecting the trail to the east side of the river.

Good trail for canal history buffs

This travels mostly along the towpath of the original Champlain Canal. Although it's pleasant and shady, it's way too short to be made a destination, unless you happen to be a history buff. Trail runs from Lock 5 of the Hudson River, just north of Schuylerville, to the Schuyler House, just south of the post office. The trail is somewhat difficult to find in parts. It actually runs almost 1.5 miles.
