Dunes Kankakee Trail Description

The Dunes Kankakee Trail is a 1.8-mile walking and bike path that carries trail users throughout Indiana Dunes National Park.

Starting at the trail's southern endpoint just outside the park at the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center, the trail carries park visitors in through the heart of the park before ending at the scenic Porter Beach. From here, trail users can enjoy the beach or explore the impressive nearby sand dunes.

The trail also connects to the Calumet Trail, a 9.1 trail that crosses the park east-west. At the western endpoint of the Calumet Trail, there is also the Porter Brickyard Trail, a mostly on-road route that also covers the park.

Where it connects with the Calumet Trail, the Dunes Kankakee Trail also crosses the Dunes Park Station. This transit station connects the Indiana Dunes National Park with major cities like Chicago, Gary, Michigan City and South Bend. Between the transit line and the trail, park visitors can experience the beauty of the park completely car-free.

Parking and Trail Access

There is parking at Porter Beach, at the end of N 25 E, at the Indiana Dunes State Park Gatehouse and Parking (1618 Indiana Dunes State Park), and at the Indiana Dunes Visitors Center (1215 IN-49).

For transit information, check out the South Shore Line.
