East Fork Trail (CO) Description

Colorado's East Fork Trail follows along the East Fork of Powerhorn Creek, which is pockmarked by beaver-dammed ponds. Bring your fishing pole but leave your bike at home. This trail is suited to hikers who don't mind a little bush-whacking through the streamside willows, and the occasional horseback rider.

Be prepared to get wet feet, too, since you'll have to cross the creek in places. The first section of the trail is mostly wooded before the landscape opens to meadows, about halfway in, and ends at Robbers Roost, site of an old cabin.

Parking and Trail Access

From Gunnison, take US 50 west for about 9 miles to State Route 149 south. Go 17 miles and turn left at Powderhorn on County Road 27. Go 1 mile south to the old Powderhorn Store then turn west (right) for 0.25 mile to the Powderhorn Cabins. Turn left on Ten Mile Springs Road. Continue for 10 miles to the trailhead. The road is rough enough toward the end that you may want 4-wheel drive or high clearance. Low-impact camping is allowed at the trailhead and anywhere along the trail.
