Fowler Trail Description

The Fowler Trail is an easy hike in scenic Eldorado Canyon State Park that provides a great place to sight wildlife, watch rock climbers, or take in stunning views of the surrounding canyon. Interpretive signs along much of the trail's route provide information on the many animals that can be found in the area.

The western half of the Fowler Trail was built on what was once supposed to be a narrow-gauge railway from Denver to Salt Lake. It was graded by the Denver, Utah and Pacific Railroad Company in the late 1800s, but tracks were never laid. It served as the only corridor into the canyon until the road was built in 1926-27.

The eastern half of the trail has been improved for wheelchair use.

The short trail is less than a mile long, although the connecting—and more challenging—Rattlesnake Gulch Trail offers a longer journey and an opportunity to view the ruins of an old hotel.

Parking and Trail Access

An $8 daily vehicle pass is required for entrance into Eldorado Canyon State Park. To reach the park from Boulder, take State Route 93 south, and then turn right (west) on SR 170 (Eldorado Springs Drive). The park entrance is just west of the community of Eldorado Springs.
