This 4.2-mile gravel path, which also connects the Busch Greenway and Katy Trail to form a 13.1-mile loop, offers an ideal way to explore the area around the Missouri River.
About the Route
The Hamburg Trail is located one-third of a mile west of the Katy Trail’s Weldon Spring Trailhead, and continues north towards Route 94, where it connects to Busch Greenway. The trail has a gravel surface and is best suited for walking, running, and mountain biking (road bikes may struggle on the uneven surface). The trail offers a scenic path through the surrounding woodlands, with wildflowers blooming along the trail in the spring and summer and great opportunities to enjoy the foliage in the fall. The trail, and surrounding Weldon Spring Conservation area, is also a great spot for birdwatching.
Connections
The trail connects to the Busch Greenway as well as the 239-mile-long Katy Trail.
Trail History
The trail follows the route of a railroad spur that once connected the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad line (1870-1988) to the Weldon Spring Site Remedial Action Project. The Weldon Spring Site Interpretive Center, accessible from the Hamburg Trail, offers an opportunity to learn more about the area's history, the uranium processing plant that previously operated within the park, the Weldon Spring Site’s connection to World War II and the Cold War, and the remediation process. Thus, the trail offers the great opportunity to not only enjoy the beauty of the Weldon Spring Conservation area, but also to learn about the region’s multifaceted history.
Parking is available at various points along Route 94. In addition, parking is available at the Weldon Spring Site Interpretive Center. Please see the TrailLink Map for all options and detailed directions.
