Moraine State Park Bike Trail Description

Moraine State Park features a paved multiuse trail, which runs along the north shore of Lake Arthur for 7.3 miles. Along the way, you'll enjoy beautiful scenery, especially during the fall as trees line the lake and trail.

From its southeast endpoint by the Davis Hollow Marina, the trail meanders west as it closely follows the shore to the northwest point of the lake. The route has some relatively short downgrades and curves. Along the way, the trail passes Nealey's Point, Watts Bay Marina, Barber Point Beach, Lakeview Beach, Five Points Campground (where you can access the Five Points Trail's northern trailhead), and the park's bike rental facilities. The trail's northwest end is by the park's bike rental facilities (118 N Shore Dr, Portersville).

Parking and Trail Access

Parking is available at both ends of the trail and at Lakeview Beach.

Moraine State Park Bike Trail Reviews

Rode this trail today. It was a very interesting trail to say the least. It is rather smooth, just a few hiccups. I would consider it to be a challenging trail. Another of turns, ups and downs, but overall a fun ride

Not a railtrail - lots of ups and downs

Rode this trail this past Saturday and right off the top, this is not a railtrail or even a canal towpath. I basically knew as much based on the map and wonder how it even ended up on this site.

Nevertheless, the trail has several nice features. The entire trail is paved and in excellent condition. I saw only a few root/frost heaves. There are several benches and a few pavilions along the way and some nice lake views. This lake seems to be popular with sail boats as we saw quite a few. There are also several restrooms along the way though a few were closed when we were there.

This trail is basically a workout trail. The trail is very twisty with lots of ups and downs. A weaker rider or a child will likely have some difficulties.Go in knowing this and you'll be okay, otherwise you may be a bit surprised.

Spring Ride 2023

A nice day for a Spring ride. The trail runs along side of Lake Arthur within the park. It is paved and has many turns and small hills. 7.5 miles in length, out and back. Ends at where the former Outdoor Recreation Center is. Trailhead and mile 0 is at the Bike Rental and large parking area.. There was a building at that location but burned May, 2022 due to a fire. The bike rental is open and they are operating out of trailers.

September Ride

A lot of the trail is still green, leaves aren't changing much but goldenrod is everywhere! Trail is 7.5 miles and runs along the North Shore. At the trailhead on the Northshore, the bike rental is operating out of trailers since there was a fire at their building in the Spring. Happy to see they are up and running.

Summer 2022 Ride

Great trail in the State Park. Lots of greenery and nice shade. Trail is asphalt paved and is very winding with some small hills. End to end (not a loop) is just under 7.5 miles. Picnic shelters and restrooms along the way. At the trailhead and parking lot, the building which housed the bike rental had a fire in the Spring. Apparently due to a lightning strike. At the complete other end of the trail, the former Outdoor Recreation Center building has been razed. Built when the park was constructed in the early 1970's it had fallen to disrepair and been vacant for some time.

feels like fall

Great walk today along the water near the mill. leaves falling, smell of fresh pine and nuts. great time!

Evening Ride-June 2021

It was a nice late Spring evening for a ride on the trail. Not real crowded at that time of the day. Trail is asphalt paved in very good condition.

Nice for Winter walking

A great trail to get out there and walk on in the Winter!

Winding with small hills

This 7 mile trail is very technical. Out and back, winding and uphill both ways. A great workout for sure.
Trail follows along the lake. Picnic areas and restrooms along the trail. Most of it is shaded traveling though the woods.
You have to really pay attention on this one as this trail is very well used by all out enjoying it. You may be cruising along then come to a quick turn to discover people out in the middle around the bend. So if you're out there going for speed, this is not the trail. If you're out for a leisurely ride, this is the right trail.
There is a bike rental at the trail head, call ahead for hours. Open most days throughout the summer and shortened hours off season. However if the weather is nice and people are looking to rent, they will be open.

My Favorite Local Trail

I must say, this trail has grown on me and is now my favorite local spot to get in a good workout. The trail has great scenery and, unlike the mostly level rail trails, this one has lots of twists, turns, and small hills to keep it interesting. While short, a fast paced blast from the bike rental parking area to the marina and back gives you a good workout and can be done in less than an hour.

June 2019 Ride

Parked at the lot where the bike rental is and rode out to the end of the trail at the Nature Center. Trail passes picnic areas, several parking lots and a public beach. Park restrooms along the trail.
Trail is asphalt paved in very good condition but has several bends and small hills. Makes for a nice challenge.
On weekends the trail can be a bit crowded the first few miles from the bike rental. Go farther out, less people.
Out and back trail, not a loop. Great state park trail features tree shaded sections and open sections.

Nice trail to ride

I'm new to biking and have done parts of the Montour trail, Brooke trail in WV and yesterday rode the Moraine bike trail. It is fully paved with only a few bumps in the blacktop. A few hills in both directions so you get a good cardio, some long coasts to get speed or recover from the grades, a lot of turns so its not a boring straight ride and lots of shade and views of the lake. Mile markers are good to let you know how you are doing distance wise, bathrooms at both ends, a decent bike rental if you just want to try out a type of bike or add this into a weekend of camping/boating at the park. did 14 miles total in just over an hour and I am far from in shape....more of a challenge than a rails to trails ride with the turns and steeper grades. well worth the trip to the park.

A short challenge...

We rode this trail on a Saturday in October. The leaves are beginning to change colors.

Though this trail is only 7 miles in length (not a loop), you will get quite the workout as it is winding and rolling!

There are many straight flat areas, but also thrown in are some hilly twists and turns.

The trail begins at the Bike Rental on the North Shore and goes out to the Moraine Outdoor Center. You will pass several beaches, boat launches and marinas, an area for camping, the rental cabins and rest rooms with flush toilets. Parking available along the trail whether it be at a beach or marina.

At this time of year, not all the rest rooms were open but there were still quite a few open.

The park offers fishing and boating, seasonal swimming, camping, picnic areas and cabins for rent. Snack bars also opened seasonal.

The bike rental is seasonal, check with them if you are in question about renting. They offer a variety of different bikes to rent from kids to adults. No two bikes are alike!

As always, here in Pennsylvania, our State Parks are free to use.

Great paved trail!

Good clean paved surface. Rolling terrain, great lake. Great for the kids or as a quick way to make a few laps!

Moraine / Lake Artur

Make this trail a part of a day excursion . Though a short trail ,7 miles , McConnells Mill State park is only a couple miles away .Hike the trails there, its beautiful, then go to Moraine to finish up with a nice ride along Lake Arthur.

Excellent trail for biking or walking

It's a beautiful trail, however, not for anyone "out of shape" like myself... There are a lot of hills, and these not really bad to most people, it can be challenging. That being said, the trail has magnificent scenery, is mostly shaded, and runs by the lake on many occasions. There are benches to sit and relax at, and the beginning end of the trail has a bike rental facility. Plenty of parking, and lots of different places to get on the trail at.

In short, it's a beautiful trail, and being totally paved, makes for a really nice ride!

Awesome Trail

I have been riding this trail since it was first opened. It is one of my favorites. It is beautiful anytime of the year. The weekends do get busy. So if you can, try it during the week.
