Portneuf Greenway Description

The Portneuf Greenway is a collection of paved trails, currently totaling nearly 17 miles throughout Pocatello, connecting residential and commercial neighborhoods with natural areas. Trail advocates are working towards developing the Portneuf Greenway into a 27-mile pathway.

Named for the Portneuf River, which portions of the greenway parallel, the trail at times gets quite close to the waterway and offers trailside benches to take in the views. The pathway connects a handful of parks along the way, which offer convenient jumping on-and-off points for the trail with parking lots, picnic areas, and restrooms.

A highlight of the trail is the Edson Fichter Nature Area; spread over 29 acres in south Pocatello, the preserve provides an excellent opportunity for viewing wildlife and for fishing. Another gem along the route is the Portneuf Wellness Complex on the north end of the trail, which offers a wealth of recreational opportunities, including athletic fields, sand volleyball and basketball courts, a playground, and a reservoir with a beach, swimming area, and fishing docks.

Another scenic trail section begins on the Idaho State University campus and heads down to the river. Along the way, it passes two great attractions: Zoo Idaho and the Bannock County Historical Museum, which includes the Fort Hall Replica, a re-creation of a fur trading post circa the early 1800s.

Parking and Trail Access

Parking is available at many points along the trail, including:

  • Portneuf Wellness Complex (2375 Olympus Drive)
  • Sacajawea Park (off Aspen Lane)
  • Rainey Park (900 S. Arthur Ave.)
  • Centennial Park (S. Grant Avenue and Idaho Street)
  • Taysom Rotary Park (1663 S. Bannock Highway)
  • Upper Ross Park (3101 Avenue of the Chiefs)
  • Edson Fichter Nature Area (6011 Arapahoe St.)

Lots of Interconnected Little Trails

Lots of variety on this relatively short system of trails. I skated from Idaho State to Edson Fichter Nature Area and back. There are a few hills near campus but they aren't too steep. I really liked the varying scenery on these trails. Hills, sunflower fields, in-town section with big rock cliffs, sagebrush flatland, creekside, and then ending at a nice pond. Pavement is pretty good except along the creek on the way to Edson Fichter where it's rough for skating.
