Province Lands Bike Trail Description

Opened in 1967, the Province Lands Trail was the first bike trail created by the National Park Service. The pathway is a challenging trek, with steep hills, sharp turns and tunnels with low clearances. Sand swept across the path by wind is a constant occurrence, while standing water can also be a frustrating obstacle. Don't let all this discourage you, though: the twists, turns, ups and downs of this long trail make it one of the most enjoyable options for a ride or run on Cape Cod.

The trail, located on the opposite side of US 6 from the popular vacation destination of Provincetown, consists of a main loop around Beech Forest, a densely wooded area home to several ponds and lots of wildlife. A short spur within the woods offers access to Bennett Pond, while two slightly longer spurs provide access to Herring Cove Beach on Cape Cod Bay and Race Point Beach on the Atlantic Ocean.

Parking and Trail Access

Parking for the Province Lands Trail is available at the Province Lands Visitor Center (171 Race Point Road; just off US 6). Restrooms are also available, although the center has limited hours.

Parking may also be available at Herring Cove Beach and Race Point Beach. Note that beach entrance fees are charged when lifeguards are on duty. Visit the Cape Cod National Seashore's official Fees & Passes website for more information.
