Whitaker's Way honors the late Jim Whitaker, a former mayor of North Platte and avid runner. The trail traces the west edge of the North Platte Public District (NPPD) canal all the way to Lake Maloney, a distance of nearly three miles. A memorial bench to the late mayor sits at lookout point offering sweeping views of the city and beyond. Whitaker's Way is open to cyclists and pedestrians.
There is parking at the north end of the trail on South Dodge Hill Road, and at Lake Maloney (9402 Lakeview Dr, North Platte) on the south end.
