Jessie Binford (1876—1966), a lifelong social worker and human rights advocate, spent her first 30 years in Marshalltown, Iowa, living in the home built by her father, Thaddeus Binford, a wealthy Quaker attorney (and now listed on the Register of Historic Places). It was there she met her career partner, Jane Addams, the founder of Chicago's Hull-House, a settlement house where educated women like Addams and Binford provided educational and social services to immigrants. [1] After meeting Addams, Binford decided to move to Chicago to work and live at Hull-House as an advocate for the poor. During her 60 years of service, Binford founded the Juvenile Protection Association while continuing her work with Addams. Toward the end of her life, she moved back to Marshalltown and lived in the Hotel Tallcorn until her death in 1966. [2]
