In 1985, the film crew for the Gene Hackman and Dennis Hopper hit “Hoosiers”—a film about Indiana’s long-standing love affair with basketball—stumbled upon the humble Knightstown Gym and chose it to be the home of the Hickory Huskers. Listed as one of Indiana's Hallowed Hardwood's by ESPN, the former Knightstown Gym is now the Hoosier Gym & Museum. Thanks to the restoration efforts of Historic Knightstown and Historic Landmarks of Indiana, the gym has become an iconic location in the years since the movie’s release, drawing more than 60,000 visitors per year. In addition to attracting tourists, the gym hosts over 100 high school basketball games every year, including the annual Hoosier Classic—the Indiana High School All-Star basketball game in which the teams are split into “Hickory” and “Terhune,” the two teams from the movie. On March 10, 2021, the United States Senate passed a resolution introduced by U.S. Sens. Todd Young and Mike Braun celebrating 100 years of the Hoosier Gym and the 35th anniversary of the film.
