Owen Lovejoy Homestead

Hennepin Canal State Trail

Black History Religion

Vintage Postcard from Princeton, Illinois depicting The Owen Lovejoy Homestead in 1905.

The Lovejoy Homestead in Princeton served as one of the most important Underground Railroad stations in Illinois, thanks to Reverend Owen Lovejoy. Elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1856, Lovejoy was known as an outspoken abolitionist who openly proclaimed his willingness to assist those looking to flee the South. Lovejoy occupied the homestead while helping freedom seekers from 1838 until his death in 1864.
