Spent a week in Grand Rapids and biked this trail with my husband for the first time and had a wonderful time. Enjoyed the scenery which was outstanding some of the trail needs a little bit of work but overall was a great trail and a great place to bike
Some of the complaints about this trail are not entirely invalid...and it should also be noted that not everything needs to be perfect, in order to be worthwhile. Yes, I wish the ashpalt were in somewhat better condition (and I wish it ran all the way to Woodstock.) But the ride is still enjoyable, and worth making. The Casey Jones Trail is the only place on Earth (other than a zoo) where I have seen a soft-shelled turtle.
Google Maps seems to indicate that the ashphalt only runs about halfway to Woodstock, but in my experience, it's a lot more like 3/4ths of the way.
According to the 2020 census, Woodstock only has a population of 110...so you wouldn't really expect there to be cool place like Staci's Bar & Grill, where one can obtain sandwiches & beer. But fortunately, you'd be wrong.
We are able to access this trail right from our home in Maplewood. The trail is very bumpy from Maplewood all the way to Phalen. Perhaps the city is not maintaining it at this time because they want to turn it into a bus line with the trail running along side it. That would be a tragedy for all that use the trail and the homeowners that live along the trail.
We rode from Whalan to Peterson and then we turned around and rode to Lanesboro and finally back to Whalan - a total of 27 miles. We rented bikes at the Cedar Valley Resort, which were reasonably priced and great quality. The trail was beautiful - very rural with good views of the river, prairie, and bluffs. The surface was smooth, shaded, and clear of debris. Most of it was flat with a few hills. We saw songbirds, turkeys, and goats. The towns provide a nice break with a chance to stop, walk around, and get something to eat.
This is the only trail so far that I’ve given five stars! Great ride!!
Mostly great trail. The southern part leading to the city was a little rough and not marked very well. The northern part was great!
As the name of this trail suggests, you are taken along Highway 96. This trail is literally along the highway making for a non-relaxing, very noisy trek.
Great and easy ride. Some really pretty sections (and some not), but worth the ride!
Due to the short distance and heavy foot traffic, this is better for walking than biking.
this trail is really great too ride on to see overgrown weeds and horses. there is not much for greenery unlike Canyon Valley Trail. there is a nice bar at the end and it completed my 26. 4 mile ride on my bike
I like the green around sections of the trail with Long distance riding, this trail really helps me complete a 26. 4 mile ride down here and then goodhue County pioneer trail. it is such a good thing that there was an easy TrailLink and this one was my favorite part because of the soft downhill cruise with little uphill
