Mount Vernon Trail

beautiful views!

August, 2022 by bethrobbinsmd

Yes, it's narrow, curvey and bumpy. No, you can't speed like a bat out of Hades around the strollers and seniors and kid in pink bike helmets. But shady trees, views of the sparkling Potomac, the creeks and wetlands, more than make up for it. Watch for those tree root bumps and take the time to enjoy this lovely trail.

Wilderness Road Trail

Very Nice!

August, 2022 by allanray121

I biked the entire trail today; both ways. One has to know a little bit about the history of the area to really appreciate this trail, but even if you are not a history buff, the scenery and farmland is well worth the ride. My only complaint is that there is no history of the old railroad itself to be found anywhere along the trail. There really needs to be a plaque/marker at each end of the trail telling they history of the old railroad grade. I saw

New River Trail State Park

Best Rail Trail in the Area

July, 2022 by nmarzoli04

This might be heresy from someone who lives in Abingdon near the Creeper Trail terminus, but this is my favorite rail trail in the area. Yesterday my wife and I rode from Foster Falls south all the way to Fries Junction, and then on to Fries and back. Total was about 45 miles. This trail has beautiful scenery, is well maintained, has a pretty level grade, and doesn't seem to have crowds. The only "challenging" stretch was near the dams, as the incline increased a bit and the trail became a bit rockier, but other than that it was smooth gravel all the way. Don't miss this SW VA gem! I can't wait to go back and do the other half to Pulaski and the final 12 miles to Galax.

Dismal Swamp Canal Trail (VA)

Very smooth for skating

July, 2022 by bill.herron

Great asphalt path for inline skating. Other than twigs and pine tree needles it is very clean with no rocks. This would be a great place for a long skating ride. I went 10 miles, because I couldn’t stop to turn around. It was too fun!

Newport News Park Bikeway

Great for a Tandem Bike ride¿

July, 2022 by utpaduke

Mel and I rode this beautiful trail on our tandem bike on Mon-Tues. We had planned to ride 2 loops for 10.6M each day. After completing the 1st loop on Monday, we decided to ride the trail in reverse from exit to begin. We found riding in that direction more conducive to the slight ups/downs! Even though it has been hot average 85F, the heat was manageable - 99% shaded¿ Luv it!

Dick & Willie Passage Rail Trail

Nicely maintained paved trail with very little traffic. One of the nicest we've been on. Long 3 mile steady uphill grade but it was really worth it. We also rode the Silver Bells trail and the spur trail toward uptown. Well worth the effort!

I hesitate to describe how perfect this trail is out of fear that more people will be using it next time! But I must celebrate the people who maintain it and keep it so nice. Thanks to all who contribute! The trail is well marked, scenic, and euphonious.

Chessie Nature Trail

Great experience

July, 2022 by dcsnyder

What a neat & different trail. To ride in a few cow pastures is pretty cool. Nice 14 mile round trip, mostly wooded, near the river. Surfaces vary but can be handled with even 32mm all terrain tires. Some bumpy areas and of course cow poop. Fun times!!!

New River Trail State Park

A Little Rough

July, 2022 by dcsnyder

Galax to Fries Junction to Fries and back. It was about 7 miles above Galax that was a bit rougher with about 1/2 inch pebbles in some areas and rocks sticking out of the ground. Been on many gravel trails and this was one of the worst surfaces I've been on. The section to Fries was nice with newer gravel. The ranger said they have materials just not staff to do it . Great scenery and could be an elite trail if they can fix the surface

Lifecore Trail

urban trail with a park

July, 2022 by tom.joy

Paved urban trail - not a RT. Plenty of parking at the “Wilson” end, since the other end just stops at a construction site. Many of the road crossings are small and the large ones have signal control buttons. Not flat - comfortable ups and downs past housing developments, medical offices, and hospital. McD and other fast food at the end the route along Tinkling Spring Rd. Augusta Kitchen (closer to trail head) looked like a great place to eat, but only opened at 11:00 and we rode earlier. A pleasant park down a short paved access road off the parking lot with 1/2 mile walking trail around small lake to enjoy after your ride. Also has clean & modern bathroom.

Blue Ridge Tunnel Trail

West Trail Head Blazer

June, 2022 by nakisha.smith

My sweetheart and I did this trail today…it was amazing. Nevermind the part where I thought about calling Waynesboro Police to come pick me up on the way back to the car, LMAO! It was time to bond with nature and there were so many lessons. “The light at the end of the tunnel””gotta get up and climb that hill AGAIN!” Tom Petty ¿
