New Trail Reviews

This trail the was nice but clearly intended for residents only. Businesses around it with signage stating “not trail parking.” Little to no parking access for non residents. Construction on trail but detours from the trail side are poorly marked but seem to be well marked in the residential areas surrounding. Trail is really several trails with one area not accessible to the other. Not sure why it is listed as “a” trail. Should be two. If you can access it you will enjoy it but good luck. We tried multiple points and spoke to people on it that did not have any good recommendations.

In late October of 2025, I traveled from Southern California to Kauai for what would be the completion of a retirement goal my late wife and I made twelve years ago: ride our bikes in all fifty states. Although my bride of forty-five years was only with me in spirit, my son and daughter-in-law joined me for this momentous ride on the Hall of Fame trail.

In my mind, this trail can essentially be divided into two parts. From the approximate midpoint in Kapa'a at Kou Street you can head north for beautiful unobstructed views of the coastline, ocean, and countryside. If you're into hotels, condos, houses, cars and busy streets, then head south for a less than primo experience.

Having said that, we started around the midpoint in Kapa'a at Holoholo Bike Rentals on Kou Street where there is public parking and headed north. The northern portion is everything you could hope for in a Hawaiian coastal bike path. The trail is smoothly paved and perfectly maintained with an oh so gentle incline (which my 7-speed rental stuck in 7th gear had no problem negotiating). For me, this ride was all about the awesome ocean views and photo ops, so we took it slow and took a ton of photos. This isn't a trail for racers looking to burn calories; this is a path designed with a beach cruiser mentality, so take it slow and imprint the experience and images into your hippocampus.

Despite the warm eighty degree temps, the steady ocean breeze and intermittent rain showers kept us comfortably cool as we slowly pedaled our way up the gentle incline.

One highlight and pleasant surprise for us was something which isn't noted in any reviews, photos, or the TrailLink trail description. Near the northern end is an unmarked, short, paved spur that takes you uphill through a tunnel of trees for about a hundred yards or so to a parking lot with a restroom. If you're on a one speed beach cruiser, you'll probably have to walk it up the incline, but the experience of being totally enveloped by the tangle of low hanging tree branches is amazing, and of course it's a blast coasting back down to Ke Ala Hele Makalae!

The southern portion of the trail from the midpoint has its moments with decent ocean and beach views, but it's just not the same as the north where you're consistently hugging the rugged coastline and surrounded by natural vegetation. If you don't mind lots of buildings, sharing the road with cars, some dirt/sand paths in need of signs to direct which way to go, or riding alongside busy Kuhio Highway and avoiding vehicles turning into driveways, then go for it!
(I truly wanted to ride the entire trail from end to end, but because of some of that weirdness mentioned above, my riding companions grew a bit perturbed, so we only got as far as Papaloa Road before turning back north to the bike rental.)

All in all, the northern half on its own is Hall of Fame worthy, and the Ke Ala Hele Makalae was a perfect ending for my fiftieth state bike ride!

I started in Trenton and rode to Piqua, spent the night there and road back the next day.. my trip north.. it was good until I got to Dayton.. somehow I didn't quite get on the right trail, I run two apps on my phone so as I was confused, I used my GPS for help.. it took me through a neighbor hood I wouldn't travel in at night.. but after I while my GPS put me back on the trail.. sort of the same thing in Troy but not as bad.. the trails go be better marked.. I really started likeing the trail more once I got through Troy.. very beautiful are.. and it was a great ride.. 69.28 miles one way.. I was very tired and very sore at the end of my ride and slept very well that night LOL.. on the way back south.. I found the trail somewhat better marked and easier to follow especailly though Troy and Dayton..
got down to Franklin.. and seen 4 to 5 American Bald Eagals.. what an awesome sight.. sadly by the time I got my camera out, all but one had flown off.. I was disapointed.. I waited around, hoping they'd come back.. but the didn't.. not while I was there.. I had to leave, it would be getting dark on me sooner than I like..
All and all.. it was a great ride.. very tired and sore but it was worth it.. I will probably do this ride again maybe next year... but got a lot other trails to ride before coming back to this one.. :)

It's not bad, but really only worth it if you're a local.

It's sunny, wide and open, a good round trip, and has a great view of Lake Erie. The northern portion by Carlson High School is pretty rough but evens out quickly.

First trail for a family with 2 large e-bikes with small children. We just tried it at 1m from the top near Crestwood/kirkwood. Parking is clean and nice. A bathroom with compose toilet is different but interesting change. A couple of stops for cars. The splits (2 metal bars) that I guess help slow people feel a little tight for comfort but you get use to it. Just ride slow. 5min in and you get to a restaurant. It was closed when we tried but hoping to give it a shot. Oh less than 2min and 2 street crossings is a small park for kids. So more plus. Will update when we do the entire thing.

Nice trail offering a connection from Oil Creek State Park into Titusville. Goes along Oil Creek on one side and sporting events fields on the other side. In Titusville you will find many amenities including places to eat, breweries, small shops in town, and a hotel.

I did the Tunnel Hill Trail for my first 100 mile ride on 11/1/25. Parked in Harrisburg off Barnett St and biked to the south end of the trail at the Barkhausen Cache River Wetlands Center and back.

Trail surface is almost all hard packed crushed gravel with small paved sections through Harrisburg. Fairly smooth throughout. for an unpaved trail. No big hills but several long low grade inclines/declines. In the woods and forest the whole time except when passing through towns. There are water stations and bathrooms along the trail, though they were locked when I was there.

I did my ride on a Specialized road bike on 28mm tires. A gravel bike would probably be optimal, but the road bike did fine. Weather was cool and cloudy with some rain in the middle of the day, but the trail still held up well even with the light rain. Some small gravel got caught up around my brakes adding some extra resistance but nothing major.

Saw only a few other people all day, mostly hikers and but some bikers as well. Trail only crosses small roads, there are tunnels that go under major roads. Gravel was slower than the pavement, but this was a good 100 mile ride if not concerned with a specific pace. Took me 7 hrs 22 minutes of moving time.

Nice fall colors in late October/early November and the trail had a nice isolated feeling like not many people use it. I liked the bridges and the tunnels

*Note: some of the pictures on here, including the highlighted picture for this trail are not of this route. The highlighted "trestle bridge" picture is of a bridge on the Great Allegheny Passage

simple asphalt trail, unfortunately it rides by multiple homeless encampments and the people yell and threaten you to get out of their area. Needs more police patrols present, kinda nervous to use.

I start at Red Hill Road parking lot in Pequa and do the 20 mile round trip to Turkey Hill and back, it is flat, no potholes or surprises and glorious. Two bridges, 5 miles each way along the river, often a train, many groups of rock climbers on the weekend. Just glorious. If you want to add miles, going west is level and wooded. Some might say boring however I find it cool, refreshing and safe. My favorite trail!

A lot of trail damage from storms in July 2025 makes for a very rough ride. Rough hard gravel, very bumpy ride. Could be dangerous if riding fast. My friends and I have moved to the Pa Heritage Rail Trail. NCR is more beautiful though rough. Would love to know if/when trail damage will be smoothed out. Got to be a budget for repair

We started at the dam and it was hard to find the start as there was no markings to say this was the start of the trail we found as we were about to leave over to the right. From there the trail was great for about 9 miles but then the gravel became so big we were having a bit of trouble riding. But all in all a fun little trail with some cool bluffs and neat bridges

I rode this trail on 10/26. It is fine crushed stone with a paved section that heads toward New Egypt. Good ride with some minor grade changes. The ride took a little over 2 hours to complete. Bathrooms and parking areas were nicely spaced on the trail.

This trail is destroyed and needs to be repaved. Impossible to skate safely

Currently there is a couple of sections that are really nice for the work thats been completed, but will be a fantastic trail once they have completed the sections necessary to connect them into one long trail. All the sections completed are mostly all paved and are great for walking/jogging/biking & wheelchair/stroller friendly. The only exception is tgr Naugatuck River Greenway section that starts at the Sullivan Senior Center, which has a paved trail that runs parallel to the the river and ends at the side road which you continue down a one way street that almost zig zags until you reach palmer bridge. Crossing the bridge and crossing to the paved trail that goes behind a condominium and continues until the end of the dirt parking lots (trail is paved) of John Toro Sports Complex, where the pavement ends towards the actual field. Then it transitions to the field with no defined trail. The Trail at that point isnt really distinct. I lived here most of my life and I didnt know until I saw a news article about The Rainbow Bridge and found that the trail in fact extended past where the pavement ends and continues straight past the dog park past both the first baseball field, the soccer field, and then about halfway through the 2nd baseball field there is a wide opening in the forest, where you then see the entrance to the Rainbow Bridge Trail. Which is an amazing small half looped trail, with some of the most beautiful works of art, and tributes to various pets (photos, stepping stones/memorial rock garden, a memorial fence, k-9 officers memorial bulletin board(s), sculptures, poems, signs, chairs, then the rainbow Bridge which is adorned with photos, momentos, stories, collars & tributes to pets of those who came to place their beloved pets memorials. After you find the exits shortly after that you can see the wide open pathway continues for a while on but ends at a fenced off area that currently is a business/underutilized "Sports park" that will eventually be replaced with a connector trail that will connect with other nearby trails.
