Ararat River Greenway Description

The Ararat River Greenway is a pleasant, hard surface trail in Mt. Airy, NC. The trail gets its name from the Ararat River, and was part of an initiative to restore the waterway with the twin goals of improving water quality and increasing recreational opportunities for residents. The trail meanders alongside the river from Riverside Park to Tharrington Park. The trail connects to two schools, three parks (including the H.B Rowe Environmental Park) and at its southern end you can access to the Emily B. Taylor Greenway via a recently built connector trail.

Along the trail are benches and picnic tables where you can stop and take in the scenic river views.  Canoe, kayak and tube launch stations can be found at multiple points of the riverbank. Fishing is also a great way to pass time here – the river is regularly stocked with trout.

Parking and Trail Access

Parking is available at Riverside Park (350 Riverside Dr), alongside other amenities including playground, a skatepark, a soccer field, canoe launch and restrooms. You can also park at Tharrington Park (1501 W Wensley Dr).

Smooth Riding

Really nice asphalt paved trail along the river. Some places to stop and stick your feet in the cool water. Also places to stop for a bite to eat or fill up drinks.
