Arroyo Ponce de Leon Trail Description

The Arroyo Ponce de Leon Trail is actually a twin pair of paved asphalt trails that run on both sides of their namesake arroyo in an isolated subdivision in western Rio Rancho. The eastern path begins in the south at King Boulevard, leading off from the sidepath King Boulevard Trail; just across the road is the neighborhood-serving Zia Park, and about halfway up the trail you'll encounter the spacious and lovely Havasu Park. The trail continues along the natural corridor formed by the flood channel, separated from the row of suburban homes by an adobe-colored wall, coming to an end where the development ends in the north after a journey that totals just over a mile.

The western path follows a shorter stretch of the arroyo on the other side, likewise running between the adjoining houses and the shrub-filled channel. Dirt paths continue on from the northern and southern ends on this side, with the southern extension connecting across to the Arroyo de las Montoyas Trail. Taken together, these trails provide an easy means of walking or biking throughout this little pocket of development in the middle of the New Mexico landscape, giving residents a fantastic means of getting in some quality recreation and exercise.

Parking and Trail Access

Parking is available at the southern end of the eastern trail at Zia Park, on Zia Street off of King Boulevard. Additional parking is available at Havasu Park, located at 3535 Havasu Falls Street NE.
