Black Creek Greenway Description

Notice: There are currently detours in place for the closed sections of the Black Creek Greenway. The detours utilize parts of the Weston Greenway and the Crabtree Creek Greenway. Visit the trail's website for the detour map.

Overview

At 7.1 miles, the Black Creek Greenway is one of Cary’s longest and most popular trails. The paved pathway connects several parks, schools, and shopping and dining areas.

About the Route

Starting at the trail’s northern end, at Lake Crabtree County Park, trail users are treated to recreational opportunities abound, including mountain biking, hiking, volleyball, and picnicking, as well as fishing and boating in the lake. And, just south of the county park, trail users will pass North Cary Park with its playground, climbing boulders and sports fields.

The trail heads south from here, mostly skirting through suburban backyards until reaching its southern endpoint at Fred G. Bond Metro Park.

The 310-acre metro park features a number of attractions including a boathouse, challenge course, playground, athletic fields, and more.

Connections

At its southern end, the trail reaches Fred G. Bond Metro Park, where it connects to the White Oak Creek Greenway.

This trail is part of the East Coast Greenway, a vast and developing trail network from Maine to Florida.

Parking and Trail Access

Detours and upgrades

Town of Cary is relocating this greenway north of Dynasty Drive to eliminate a streetside stretch. When I walked it in December, there was a longer streetside detour following Dynasty in the opposite direction, then returning via Cary Parkway to the trailhead on that street. There is also ongoing sewer reconstruction that may require streetside detours between Dynasty and Lake Crabtree.

mixed experience

Drove from north Raleigh to bike this trail and was somewhat disappointed. Sure there were nice parts… the lake view, shaded ride through the wooded areas along the creek/river. However, as another person stated, the trail was not well marked in some areas, you cross several busy roads and the detour was confusing and basically a ride through a neighborhood.

Great trail that has nice lake views, a few small wooden bridges, and mostly wooded streamside trail. Paved. Newish parking area at the reedy creek trailhead is a nice access point.

good for walking

A lot of holes and roots growing. Not good for skateboarding.

Older trail to become newer trail

The Black Creek Greenway is a great trail, but it's been showing its age and its vulnerability to flooding. The Town of Cary is working to rebuild the trail on higher ground. Check their website for the project's current status. https://www.townofcary.org/recreation-enjoyment/parks-greenways-environment/greenways/black-creek-greenway
