Central City Trail (IA) Description

The Central City Trail winds for 3 miles along the banks of the Wapsinicon River, running through Pinicon Ridge County Park into downtown Central City.

Pinicon Ridge County Park is 966 acres of green space, whose highlights include campgrounds, boating, watercraft rentals, fishing, hiking trails and a 65-foot tall observation tower. The trail was central to connecting the two sides of the park, which is bisected by the Wapsinicon River. The Central City Trail begins at the Waterfront Concession and heads up past the boat landing to the water's edge. A pedestrian bridge allows users to cross easily from the west bank to the east bank, where the campgrounds are located. Before, park visitors  had to drive 2 miles to reach the other side of the park. The bridge is known as the Mary A. Lundby Memorial Bridge, in honor of the State Senator who passed away in 2009.

Across the river, the trail winds through campgrounds, and through a wooded area. The trail passes underneath Marion Road (State Road 13) where it enters Central City. It sticks close to the water's edge until its endpoint in Courtyard Park.

Parking and Trail Access

A small parking area overlooks the river in Central City. The lot is located on Commerce Street, which curves between State Street and N. 2nd Street.

In Pinicon Ridge County Park (4732 Horseshoe Falls Rd, Central City, IA 52214), you can park at the Waterfront Concession.

Central City Trail (IA) Reviews

Very scenic and beautiful Trail!

We rode this trail in late May, 2023. The concrete trail is very wide, and just a few slight hills when you reach the campground. It is great to ride along the Wapsipinicon river, and then through the campground itself. A wonderful addition to Central City! if you have your children with you, there are several amazing playgrounds with a rubberized surface, as well as all accessible swings, etc.!
