Claysville National Pike Trail Description

Following a pre-Civil War railroad line from the eastern edge of Claysville to Timber Lake Road, the Claysville National Pike Trail passes through two arch tunnels and offers scenic views of the surrounding landscape. Despite navigating a route between US-40 and Interstate 70, this nature trail is quiet and serene as it meanders through the townships of Donegal and Buffalo.

The surface of this nearly 2-mile trail periodically shifts between grass, dirt, and gravel. Near the eastern end of the trail, there is a picnic area with a grassy field. Bring along a packed lunch and spend some time relaxing in the fresh air.

The Claysville National Pike Trail opened in May 2022 thanks to the dedication and hard work of the Claysville National Pike Trail Council, who are planning to eventually expand the trail another half-mile eastward to the third tunnel near Timber Lakes Road.

Parking and Trail Access

At the trail's western endpoint, there is a paved parking lot with entrances on both US Route 40 and Valley View Road (4500 Donegal Ind Park, Claysville).

At the eastern end of the trail, parking is available in a lot off of T488 by Timber Lake.

Claysville National Pike Trail Reviews

Great Short Trail

Great little trail. I have been wanting to do this trail for a while but was closed, so glad it is finally open. There is still a lot little construction that you need to go around (Trail around area is marked very well by engineering tape). Trail only had a few small muddy areas that were easily avoided. Bring a flashlight/bike light for the longest tunnel. This is a hidden little gem of a trail.

Cool New Discovery

Ran the trail this morning for the first time and was pleasantly surprised with the experience. I found the two tunnels on the trail a neat experience and hopefully in the future they will be able to add some lighting. The trail would make for an easy hike with little to no elevation change and is situated in the delightful little town of Claysville Pennsylvania.

Claysville National Pike

A new and still underdevelopment rail trail opened May 2022. The trail is a mix of grass and crushed stone. The trail goes through two train tunnels. The trailhead parking lot is in Claysville, PA and passes behind a General Dollar store where you can pickup items to eat at some benches and picnic tables along the trail. Trailhead needs a restroom.
