Flint River Greenway (AL) Description

The Flint River Greenway is a scenic trail through the Hays Nature Preserve, a wooded area where deer, rabbits, birds and other wildlife are abundant. Here, you can enjoy hiking, biking, fishing, horseback riding and picnicking.

At its northern end, the trail connects with the Big Cove Creek Greenway, which can take travelers about 3 miles north.

Future plans include extending the trail to the Goldsmith-Schiffman Wildlife Sanctuary on the other side of US 431. The sanctuary includes more than 375 acres of forested bottomlands and fallow fields dotted with ponds and swamps. An abundance of birds, deer, coyotes, wild boar and other animals call the area home.

Parking and Trail Access

Parking lots are available at each end of the trail in Hays Nature Preserve (7153 South US 431, Owens Cross Roads) and also off of Old Hwy 431.

Flint River Greenway (AL) Reviews

Great Little Trail

Camping at Cathedral Caverns with our Grands, loaded up our bikes and all went for ride on this trail, this is a very nice trail, it may only be 1.8 miles but it’s very scenic, two nice bridges crossing the Flint River.

Great first trail

Beautiful views, a couple of bridges and plenty of wildlife. Great first ride for my wife and I.

Beautiful Greenway

This is a lovely greenway. My favorite. While it is not lengthy, it does connect with the Big Cove Greenway and the newly completed Little Cove Road Greenway. Two graceful arched bridges cross the Flint River. The trail is off road and has a great combination of forest, field and river views.

Locals seem to love this greenway. Every so often there seems to be a dog-walk day that can interfere with bike traffic but I have not seen this as a major problem.

Ample and beautiful parking lots at each terminus of the trail.
