Print Friendly MapThe Gary Green Link Trail is part of the Buchanan Street Green Gateway project and follows the Grand Calumet River starting at Bridge Street on its way to Broadway at City Hall. It is about 4.4 miles roundtrip. About half of the trail follows the river while the other half is through the city. Most of the trail is on either a paved trail or on extra-wide sidewalks with well-marked and accessible street-crossings, but one-quarter mile shares a low-traffic street with cars. There is good directional signage throughout the trail.
From the Indiana Toll Road, I-90, take the Buchanan St. exit southbound to the local trailhead. The west trailhead is at Bridge Street, but there is no parking there.
The recommended trailhead is at the north end of Roosevelt St at West 2nd Ave where ample free on-street parking is available. Parking is also available in the lot at 301 Garfield St, a short walk from the trailhead via a riverside path that runs parallel to West 2nd Ave.
This is a very nice urban trail with lots of trees on the half that follows along the river. The part through the city has nice wide sidewalks and street-crossings that are well-marked.
It will be interesting to see this area develop and improve as the Buchanan Street Green Gateway project gets moving. Hopefully as more people use the trail it will get more attention and maintenance. The structure is there, but some cleanup along the trail would be helpful.
