The scenic Huntington Beach Bicycle Trail runs 8.4 miles along the Pacific Ocean waterfront of the most populous beach city in Orange County. Paved over its entire length and remarkably wide at some points, the trail is popular with a diverse range of trail users, including families with small children, inline skaters, joggers and those simply using the path to access the city's pristine beaches.
About the Route
The path's northern end courses through Bolsa Chica State Beach, a popular spot for surfing, sunbathing and RV camping, while the southern end passes through Huntington State Beach, arguably the best place to surf in California. Between the two, Huntington Beach City Beach features a municipal pier with direct access from the trail.
Connections
At the trail's southern terminus, turn north on the Santa Ana River Trail to travel uninterrupted for dozens of miles into inland Orange County and beyond.
The Huntington Beach Bicycle Trail (Coastal Trail) runs between Bolsa Chica State Beach (Huntington Beach) and the Santa Ana River Trail (Huntington Beach), both of which offer parking. Please note that the beach parking lots charge parking fees.
There are numerous parking options along the route, visit the TrailLink map for all parking options and detailed directions.
Rode this on a Wednesday. Wonderful path. One of the best we have been on because it is very wide and well marked. Some areas have separated pedestrian lanes which is always a bonus. We are 4-78 years olds on 3 Ebikes and one Etrike. We are always respectful of other riders and walkers. There were quite a few people using the path-enough to make it fun. Probably crowded on weekends. The bluff above the portion that is the Huntington Dog Beach was so great for watching all the dogs have a blast in the waves. This will be a repeat path in our travels.
Excellent trail improvements for a wide variety of users. Most pedestrians are compliant and stay out of the two bike only lanes. Hopefully the city will finish the trail project from 10th street to 6th and put a much needed cross walk between the restroom and the playground. Dan H
I've done this trail several times. I usually park at the south end and pay the state park system $15 to park my car in their lot. The southern and northern ends of the trail are less busy but in the middle it can be very busy and crowded. I usually try to go on a weekday. In the middle section there is a Huntington Beach Police Station and today I actually seen an officer with a radar gun clocking of all things bicycles going by. There are lots of signs with 10 mph or 5 mph limits but I have never before anywhere seen bikes being clocked by radar. Welcome to California.
We started at the North end of the trail (Boca Chico State Park) at 9am on a Saturday and rode south. Nice ocean views. We also saw a lot of container ships. Fun to ride past the dog beach. As you go into Huntington Beach, the path becomes crowded but still enjoyable. This trail links to the Santa Ana River trail (an additional 30 mile bike path). We enjoyed stopping in Boca Chico on the way back at the beach cafes for the live music.
