Running alongside the Irish Buffalo Creek north into the City of Kannapolis from the border with the City of Concord, this trail provides an enjoyable route for both recreation and commuting.
The paved greenway is 2.7 miles, 10-feet-wide, and features three pedestrian bridges. The steel and wood bridges are installed along the portions of the greenway which cross portions of the creek. From its southern end, the trail starts at Vietnam Veterans Park on Orphanage Road and then heads north through fields and woods to Rogers Lake Road. Trail access on Rogers Lake Road is between where the road crosses the creek and where the road splits to create to become a divided avenue.
Further plans for the greenway include continuing it north to connect with Safrit Park and then with Bakers Creek Park, where the city has already built two additional greenways. Together the 8th Street Greenway and the Bakers Creek Greenway create a 2-mile loop from Bakers Creek Park, along West A Street, up 8th Street to Loop Road and over to Village Park.
Vietnam Veterans Park has a small lake with a raised boardwalk along one side, restrooms, water stations for people and pets, multiple covered picnic pavilions with grills, volleyball courts, basketball courts, a playground, trash receptacles, bike racks, benches, and lots of open recreational space. There is an abundance of wildlife to observe, trees that offer shade, and 0.4 miles of nature trail within the park.
The Irish Buffalo Creek Greenway is part of the Carolina Thread Trail, which is a system of trails and greenways in the Carolinas.
Parking is available at Vietnam Veterans Park (760 Orphanage Rd, Concord). Pedestrians can access the greenway at these locations: Oakwood Avenue (across from the Lantern Green and Stonewyck neighborhoods), at Vietnam Veterans Park, and from Rogers Lake Road.
Me and my husband bring our kids here a lot. The trail is nice and is paved for most of it. It’s very easy to walk for little ones and easy to roll a stroller. We will continue come because it has a little bit of everything.
