James River Greenway Description

The James River Greenway offers a pleasant route along tree-lined Lake Springfield on the south end of Springfield. The paved pathway offers scenic views of the lake, bluffs, and prairies, as well as access to the river for fishing, canoeing, and kayaking.

In 2017, a new section of the pathway opened called the "Trail of Honor." It traces the edge of the Missouri Veterans Cemetery, providing a special place to honor veterans who have served in all branches of the country's military.

Just west of I-65, you can extend your trip on the Galloway Creek Greenway. Both trails are part of efforts by Ozark Greenways, a nonprofit group in Springfield working to expand the local trail network.

Parking and Trail Access

Parking is available within Lake Springfield Park (5324 S. Kissick Avenue).

We found no way to connect with another trail and a narrow bridge (2 lane car bridge without and bike lane or walkway) crosses the river. Nicely surfaced path rides alongside the river.

A lesson in bike riding

Unfortunately you can’t reach the whole trail from the Springfield Lake parking lot. Only about 1 mile of it is accessible from this point. We made the best of it and rode all around the park and got our 5 miles. Just a heads up that this trail does not have a connection across the river
