The Jefferson County Interurban Trail is a paved multi-use trail that follows a former interurban rail line for what will eventually be almost eleven miles through Jefferson and Waukesha County. About ten of those miles are in Jefferson County with just one mile stretching into Waukesha County. After the interurban railway that ran from Milwaukee to Watertown in the early 1900s was shuttered, the path became a utility corridor for We Energies. A licensing agreement with the company has allowed the county to renovate the existing We Energies right-of-way corridor in order to create this paved 10-foot-wide multi-use trail.
As of 2022, 2.25 miles are open for use between Watertown and Oconomowoc. The trail offers opportunities for alternative modes for commuting, as well as providing a beautiful setting for recreational activities. Running from the northern end of the Glacial River Trail in Watertown east to the shores of Lake Michigan, the trail connects to trails such as the Lake Country Recreation Trail in Waukesha County and the Hank Aaron Trail in Milwaukee. There is an abundance of wildlife and floral to observe. The route passes by marshes, woods, fields, ponds, and a river.
At the trailhead, there are restrooms, a water bottle filling station, bike racks, wayfinding signage, and a bike repair station. Due to the off-road nature of the trail and thus, the absence of cars, the trail offers increased safety for pedestrians and cyclists. The trail is flat, wide, and paved, thus making it more accessible for those using mobility aids.
The construction of the Jefferson County Interurban Trail is divided into three phases with phase one complete and phase two underway.
Parking is available by the trailhead at the intersection of Humboldt Dr & Clark St.
Actual Mileage is now 7.2 miles from Watertown to Ixonia at Hwy F. The trail is all paved now.
