Print Friendly MapA part of Manheim Township's network of multi-use greenways, the mile-long Kissel Hill Commons Trail extends across the mixed use subdivision for which it is named in the suburbs north of Lancaster.
The paved, mostly flat trail begins at Wallingford Road, immediately west of Kissel Hill Road, and near the commercial section of the development. The trail parallels Kissel Hill Road for its first quarter mile, crossing Farnum Road and then ascending one of the few small slopes on the route. The trail turns in a more southwestward direction about halfway between Farnum and Jake Landis roads, passing between yards to adjacent homes. Trail users have the option of turning from this section onto a branch path that connects to Jake Landis Road or staying on the main path, which turns sharply to the west, crossing Wallingford Road a second time. West of here, the trail passes a small playground, then follows the south shore of a lake before connecting to Wallingford Road a third and final time. As a result of its proximity to the playground and lake, this segment is very popular with local residents and flocks of ducks and geese can often be seen. The lake also provides some spectacular views, especially at dusk.
Although the trail formally ends just west of the lake, a short jaunt along Wallingford Road, followed by a left on Ashford Drive will lead users to the network of trails that loops around the campus of Landis Run Intermediate, Manheim Central High and John Henry Neff Elementary schools, providing an indirect connection to Neffsville and the Manheim Township Park Trail. The township also plans to eventually construct a trail along abandoned sections of Jake Landis Road, which would provide a connection east to Oregon Dairy. The Oregon Dairy Pathway currently provides a 0.59-mile link between the Oregon Dairy complex with the nearby Landis Homes retirement community
Parking is available along local streets or at the Kissel Hill Commons Shopping Center.
As the trail description notes there are many other trails in the area. This is one of over 14 trails we have ridden that, including the connecting road sections, totaled around 35 miles. Several of the trails are not named and some of the road sections can be busy. I was able to use Traillink.com maps to create this route. Starting at the Landis Valley Farm Museum and the Manheim Township Trail then on to Stoner Park, beside Eden Road, through the Lancaster Bible College, Overlook Park, the Heritage Trail, the Kissel Hill Commons Trail, around the Manheim Township Athletic Complex, the Manheim Township Community Park Trail, Warwick Township Highlands Trail, along Bachman Run, the Brighton-Reidenbaugh Park Trail and through some of the trails around the Manheim Township High School. Since first doing this ride I've added 6 more short trails. Our group of riders are mostly retired folks ranging in age from early 60s to mid 70s.
