Lehigh Valley Trail - Cortland County Description

A public trail owned by Cortland County since the 1977 abandonment of a Lehigh Valley railroad line built by Ezra Cornell as the "Ithaca & Cortland" in 1872, this path crosses east to west from the Lamont Circle subdivision of Cortland through the Lime Hollow Center for Environment and Culture (often just called the Lime Hollow Nature Center). Footpaths branch from the unpaved rail-trail onto forested Nature Center lands around and west of Gracie Road to the county line. Long neglected, the trail was adopted by Lime Hollow Nature Center and is now cleared and marked for pedestrian uses. Visitors of all ages can now enjoy this gentle trail nestled among wonderfully preserved mature hardwood forests and streams, home to countless species of birds and wildlife. Note however, that only the section of the Lehigh Valley Trail heading from from Gracie Road up to the east end, Lamont Circle Park (791 North Lamont, Cortland, NY) is open to users with leashed dogs. No other sections of this trail or others in the Lime Hollow Nature Center allow dogs. Also, this is tick country: wear protective clothing and always check for ticks before leaving.
