While many other rail trails in rural New York have gravel or grass surfaces, which make them difficult to traverse for cyclists and users with disabilities, the Lenox Rail Trail offers over two miles of paved, wide trail that marks a welcome addition to the communities it serves. Completed in 2019, the trail spans between the villages of Canastota and Wampsville on a corridor that once serviced the New York Central Railroad. The trail has reused more than just the land from the railroad; the town of Lenox has converted some of the original rails into a scenic overlook pavilion.
The paved trail is mostly flat, traveling through a tree-lined corridor that parallels the still-active CSX tracks for part of the route. Currently, there is no sidewalk at the eastern end of the trail, which ends at a low-stress local road. Local officials hope to one day connect the trail to the nearby Oneida Rail Trail, creating a sprawling chain of trail through the area. For now, the Lenox Rail Trail acts as a great community pathway for exercise and recreation.
Parking may be available at the western trailhead in Canastota, accessible off of Peterboro Street just south of the railroad underpass.

This is a very clean, open trail! Paved and has a few places to rest! Great for strollers, bikes or wagons! We also saw 3 trains!!! Very fun!
Perfect spot for inline or quad skating! There are rest points along the trail with benches and the train passes right next to you! The skate park is close and at the beginning of the trail which is nice.
