Lewisburg and Ronceverte Trail (L&R Trail) Description

The Lewisburg and Ronceverte Trail (commonly known as the L&R Trail) will one day connect these two historic towns set amid the Allegheny Mountains of southern West Virginia. The beautiful natural backdrop was one of the reasons Lewisburg was named by Budget Travel as the "coolest small town in America" in 2011. Explore the city on the trail that traces the route of the former L&R Railroad, which provided freight and passenger service between Lewisburg and Ronceverte from 1906 to 1931.

Currently, less than a mile of the trail has been constructed, but plans call for expanding the pathway to 6 miles. The completed Lewisburg segment is a 4-foot-wide path paved with vibrant colored asphalt that follows quiet, tree-lined streets through a town known for its many 18th- and 19th-century buildings. The trail begins near the Old Stone Cemetery and winds through Graham Addition, one of the city's most desirable neighborhoods. Phase II of the project will continue the pathway from Frazier Street to Holt Lane.

Lewisburg and Ronceverte Trail (L&R Trail) Reviews

Gentle Stroll

At only .4 miles, I would consider this more of a short stroll than a hike. There is a Pavilion at the “L&R Trailhead” but the only problem is that it’s not actually at the trailhead. You have to walk another.1 mile south before you encounter the rust colored sidewalk which signifies the actual trail. From there it’s very easy to follow and it takes you through a quiet neighborhood

incomplete

The trail isn’t complete it’s just a short walk.

Good for a short stroll

The trail isn’t completed, so right now it’s just a nice sidewalk in a quiet neighborhood. Once it extends I’m sure it’ll be awesome. If you’re looking for a short walk and some fresh air when you’re already in Lewisburg, it’s worth it.

Nice sidewalk

"Trail" is difficult to find. Just a nice sidewalk. This might be a better walk if it ever gets to Ronceverte. Don't waste your time. Go walk or ride the nearby Greenbrier River Tail.
