Overview
Located in the Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge, the Liberty Loop Trail is 2.5 miles long with a surface of gravel, grass, dirt, and crushed stone. Some portions may have raised wooden planks as the trail surface. For less than a mile, the trail runs along a former railroad corridor.
About the Route
Looping through the Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge, the trail is great for observing wildlife, birding, and nature photography. The area is a former sod farm, before which it was forested wetland. It is now home to a variety of waterbirds and songbirds.
Access the trail from Oil City Rd (Pine Island) or from the Owens Station Crossing, and enjoy your loop through wildflowers, fields, and forested wetlands.
The Owens Station Crossing (136 Owens Station Rd, Sussex) has an ADA accessible boat launch for kayaks or canoes, a dock for catch-and-release fishing, a pavilion with picnic tables, and public restrooms.
The trail is open for hiking and cross-country skiing. Dogs are allowed provided they are on a leash.
Connections
The Liberty Loop Trail connects to the Timberdoodle Trail. Continue south along the pathway from the Owens Station Crossing to reach the northern end of the Timberdoodle Trail on Bassett’s Bridge Road.
The Liberty Loop Trail is a loop and can be accessed from Oil City Rd (Pine Island) and from the Owens Station Crossing (136 Owens Station Rd, Sussex), both of which have parking.
