The Lionel Hampton Trail, on Atlanta’s west side, runs through mature forest and parkland. It's named after a jazz musician who gave the PATH Foundation the land on which the trail was later built. About mid-way, it meets the Southwest Connector Trail, part of the growing Atlanta BeltLine loop around the city.
Parking is available in Lionel Hampton Park (located at the end of Willis Mill Road).
My friend and I have enjoyed discovering the LH Trail this spring. We take 4 miles walks morning or afternoon. We’ve heard the gurgling of the creeks, have spotted deer on the path or nearby and be serenaded by many birds. The hills are gentle mostly allowing us to enjoy added cardio without pushing ourselves too much. There are benches along the trail, a playground for young children and exercise equipment too. It is an oasis in the midst of SW Atlanta. It is favorite for walkers, a few runners and neighborhood residents.
I hesitated to use trail as a runner because of lack of parking..huge mistake!!! You can park on neighborhood streets near the access points. Hoosier Church, beecher hills school, flamingo drive of willis mill. I believe You can get a total of about 5 --7 miles on entire trail.
Change of pace-using city streets you can connect to Westside belt line.
There are off road (following the creek) and paved trails. Benches are also along the trail and a playground. A natural tree canopy provides shade in summer months.
I was on an ecowalk to learn about vegetation in the forest! HUGE oak trees, natural bamboo, and others. Cool experience, will definitely return.
