Lone Tree Road Trail Description

Forming an important connection in the area's excellent network of multi-use trails, the Lone Tree Road Trail parallels its namesake roadway for over two miles in the northern reaches of Cedar Falls, IA. The trail allows pedestrians and cyclists to travel safely between the Big Woods Trail and the end of the Cedar Valley Lakes Trail, creating a lovely nine-mile loop of trails across the north side of the Cedar River.

While it may not have quite the same scenic appeal as the trails that it connects to, the Lone Tree Road Trail still provides a nice wide path perfect for a variety of recreational activities. The Big Woods Trail at the eastern end leads down into the beautiful Big Woods Lake Recreation Area, a perfect destination for fishing that is also home to a campground for trail users making longer journeys through the area. Heading west, the trail passes through the tranquil North Cedar neighborhood before winding up in Black Hawk Park, one of the largest county parks in Iowa and host to a variety of outdoor recreation activities. In the park, the trail runs into the end of the the eleven-mile Cedar Valley Lakes Trail, which runs along the Cedar River all the way through the neighboring city of Waterloo.

Parking and Trail Access

Parking is available at the western end of the trail in Black Hawk Park, on W Lone Tree Road just west of the intersection with Ford Road. On the eastern side of the trail, parking is available just south of the trail along the Big Woods Trail, at the lake-adjacent lot located just west of the intersection of E Lake Street and Big Woods Road. Either side of the trail is accessible by following Center Street from downtown Cedar Falls north to Lone Tree Road.

Necessity to connect trails

Connects the Big Woods loop trail with Black Hawk Park. Well maintained and paved, the trail runs alongside Lone Tree Road in a straight line. It’s not shaded at all, so it can be a nice sunny reprieve from the wooded trails it connects, or sweltering, depending on the weather.
