Midland Bike Trail Description

The Midland Bike Trail is popular with mountain bikers and a fairly steep climb at the start but levels out once you reach the railroad grade in about 1 mile. The trail runs between the Shields Gulch trailhead and the town of Buena Vista to the west. The railroad berm actually continues beyond Shields Gulch (north) and once carried the old Midland Railroad. You can still see remnants of the railroad and the mining operations it served. You'll also get fantastic views of the surrounding mountains.

For the most part, the trail is level but some short sections can be steep, and the gravel surface and narrow trail (single track in some places), make for more advanced riding. Take care and walk your bike through these sections if necessary. Other sections of the trail are on wider gravel roads and other trails lead off of the Midland Bike Trail.

The trail is open from spring through November, or until the snow flies.

Parking and Trail Access

From US 285/24 turn northwest on County Road 315; the trailhead is about another half mile down the road. In Buena Vista, take the Arkansas River footbridge at the end of E. Main Street and follow the Barbara Whipple Trail to County Road 304.

Best Mtn Bike Trail in BV

Beautiful trail follows Midland RR grade. Easy grade except where it dips into gulches where RR bridges originally spanned.

A Loop Alternative

We parked at the rest area on US24/285 just east of Johnson Village and biked down into Buena Vista following the Arkansas River to the municipal park on the river. After crossing the foot bridge and pushing our bikes (we are older flatlanders) up Midland Hill to the old Midland Railroad Grade we biked south and east to a county road where there is more parking then biked down the county road back to the rest area. It was a great ride with excellent mountain views.
