Newberry Trail Description

Appleton’s Newberry Trail follows the Fox River, its navigational canal locks and an active rail line at different points during its scenic trek. The area was once an industrial hub, but mature trees now provide shade and a sense of serenity to trail users.

Railfans will want to stop east of S. Lawe Street to check out the adjacent rail corridor’s swing bridge over the canal. Just past the bridge, trail users can access Lawrence University’s athletics facilities, including the unique Banta Bowl. The stadium, home to the college’s football program, is nestled inside a natural ravine.

In Telulah Park, Newberry Trail users will find a playground, skate park and disc golf course, as well as picnic pavilions, baseball diamonds and soccer fields. A restored Soo Line steam engine reminds park visitors of the area’s railroad history.

Continuing east from the park, the trail passes through a neighborhood before meeting the CE Trail at County Highway CE and S. Matthias Street.

Parking and Trail Access

Parking for the Newberry Trail is available at Telulah Park on E. Newberry Street.

Newberry Trail Reviews

This is a well maintained trail in the park, along the river, and in town. Well lit and easy to navigate. Heaviest pedestrian traffic seems to be between 530 and 730 pm

Newberry Trail

Parked in Tellulah Park..the trail is well marked. The down hill portion to the river was a bit of a ride back up on my recumbent trike, but well worth it. Nice to be along the river, friendly folks on the trail. I connected to CE Trail....which I just needed some one to point me in the direction, as directed, I rode a brief ways along College Ave/CE on the sidewalk to get to the CE trail. Overall very nice ride on a warm April day.

Pretty, but...

Currently under construction around Teluhah Park, making it a little difficult to follow. I ended up in the park and found a paved road near the back of the park that took me down to the river where the asphalt ended. After a little detour (and some unintentional trespassing), I ended up back on the path down by Banta Bowl. Lots of shade and very picturesque, but be sure to save some energy for the Newberry climb if you are making this a round trip. Wish it was a longer trail, but it meets up to CE so you can extend if you want to.
