Niobrara Trail Description

Niobrara State Park has a total 14 miles of trails open to a variety of uses, including snowmobiling. A 2.1-mile hike–bike trail incorporates a trestle from the old Chicago Northwestern Railroad, which spans 1,200 feet of the Niobrara River. An additional 160 acres of open grasslands in rolling hills are open for horseback riding. The trails vary in length, difficulty and surface type. Most are mowed grass but a few short trails have a surface of chipped limestone and are wheelchair accessible, including the railroad bridge. It is also fishing accessible.

The trails offer scenic views through native grasslands, woodlands, river bluffs and wetlands. Park amenities include fishing, camping, cabin rentals, boating, swimming pool, and picnicking. Fees apply.

Is this trail ever open?

One other reviewer found it closed in 2009, and last Sunday we drove 45 minutes out of our way to ride this, only to get about 100 feet into the trail to find it dug up and impassable. No warnings on the road to the trailhead, no warning at the trailhead. No detour. No nothing. Do not waste your time even thinking about this trail.

Drove to Niobrara State Park to find that the Missouri River was running high and closed off the road to Trailhead. A land side closed it off from the west as well as a locked gate.
