Northwest Beaver Drive Trail Description

This is a shared-use path located on the east side of Northwest Beaver Drive in Johnston, Iowa. The trail connects residents to two recreational sites on the west shore of Saylorville Lake as well as to other destinations. The wide trail features some mild slopes.

The Beaver Drive Trail begins at the 58th Street intersection, as an asphalt path separated from the roadway by a median. Neatly landscaped single-family homes are spread out along the route. The Hyperion Field Club is a private sports club and events venue whose tennis courts and golf greens are visible from the trail. Neighboring the golf course is the Ridgedale Cemetery. Just around the bend is Camp Dodge, which features a display of heavy weaponry including tanks and fighter jets perched near its entrance. By this point, the asphalt trail has transitioned into a concrete pathway and will switch between the two surface types further ahead.

Past Camp Dodge, the trail passes the entrance to the Lakeview Recreation Area on Saylorville Lake. A long road leads to the lakeshore. The situation is the same 1.5 miles north, where the trail meets the entrance to the Walnut Ridge Recreation Area. Saylorville Lake is a ... reservoir that hosts a number of activities on the water and along its shores including boating, angling, picnicking, playgrounds, birding and wildlife watching.

The Beaver Drive Trail ends on Eagle Crest Drive, a residential street on the northern city limits. The trail is open for non-motorized uses only.
