Okeechobee Road Path Description

If you are looking for an extended out-and-bike ride, then consider the Okeechobee Road (State Route 70) multiuse path. It’s 20 miles of pavement one-way along the busy highway between Fort Pierce and Okeechobee, Florida. There’s not really any amenities along it so if you need water you will have to carry it. It’s also unshaded so sun protection is key for any cyclist or pedestrian. The scenery changes from suburban/ industrial in Fort Pierce to more rural as the trail continues west.

Parking and Trail Access

There is no dedicated trail parking but parking is available at McDonalds at Pilot Gas Station/McDonalds located at intersection of Turnpike and Okeechobee Road.

Okeechobee Road Path Reviews

good trail but boring

Well paved and maintained! Very flat and not much to look at. Usual FL wildlife, we did spot TEN gators in the drainage creek alongside the path, which was cool! No shade, only one little store 5 mi from McDonald’s parking, so bring your own nutrition, water, & sunscreen!

Flat & Lots of Birds

This is a very flat trail with good, wide pavement. The westerly half is particularly rural, skirting large cattle ranches with oak hammocks. There are no trees for shade. There are many birds on this trail - hawks, herons, killdeer, kingfishers, storks, egrets, etc. - and the occasional alligator. It’s a good trail for spinning. Be sure to wear sunscreen.
