Peanut Trail Description

The Peanut Trial is a distinct trail in the town of Newton that spans one-mile. This rail-trail was meant to connect to the Jay McLaren Memorial Trail. However, due to a controversial lawsuit by land owners, this segment is separate and cannot be taken all the way through to Merrimac as it was once intended. Never the less, this trail is greatly used by local residents and provides great scenery. Motor vehicles are not permitted, but you can still bike, walk, or run the path.

Parking and Trail Access

A pull off is located across from Continental Biomass Industries 22 Whittier Street, Newton, NH. Another opening is located on Main Street near the fire station.

Peanut Trail Reviews

nice for a trail run

6/27/18: well maintained trail for the first mile (from Whittier). Last 1/2 mile by the stables is not well maintained and not good for trail running. Beautiful scenery, very flat and mostly very dry. A few trees down, but nothing you couldn’t lift a bike over. Bring your bug spray and keep moving.

Soggy but fun

A friend and I just walked the trail for the first time Friday, 4/10/15. It was a bit soggy and snow-covered, which made it a little more of a workout. Exactly what we're looking for :-)

Peanut Trail / Jay Mclaren Trail

It is possible to do the Peanut Trail and then continue onto the Jay Mclaren Trail (also listed here) bridging the two trails (formerly connected by the common erstwhile rail bed) with some road travel. There is more than one route. Look for where the Jay Mclaren trail crosses "Brush Hill Road" at its northern segment.
