The Pendleton Rail Trail begins in the town of Pendleton and for just over 6 miles, travels northeast towards the town of Lockport where the trail connects to the Lockport Rail Trail.
The 8-foot-wide rail-trail runs along a former railbed of the Erie Railroad and is almost entirely paved, except for a .7-mile hardpacked dirt section between Killian Rd and Meyer Rd in Pendleton. The paved sections are quite flat and are accessible for those using mobility aids and those with strollers.
Starting by Townline Rd in Pendleton, the trail heads northeast for about a mile, passing through woods and fields until it reaches Killian Rd. For about 7/10 of a mile, the trail continues as a hardpacked dirt path with woods on either side. Crossing Meyer Rd, the trail surface becomes paved again, which continues until the trail ends at Lockport Rd. Starting at Fiegle Rd, the power line corridor starts following the route of the former railroad alongside the trail.
Connecting the towns of Pendleton and Lockport, this trail offers locals and visitors an alternative form of transportation and recreation through the woods, fields and landscapes of New York. Whether commuting to work or going for a bike ride, take advantage of this pleasant easy route and spend some time in nature.
If you're looking for a longer adventure, try continuing your journey on the Erie Canalway Trail. At the north end of the rail-trail, head east on Lockport Rd for about 7/10 of mile and then cross over the canal. There you can access the Erie Canalway Trail, which runs for 290 miles in upstate New York—from Buffalo in the west to Albany in the east—linking many communities along the way, including Rochester, Syracuse, Rome, Utica, and Schenectady.
Parking is available in a number of loosely defined parking lots at the trailhead on Townline Rd (across the street from 7330), at 4772 Meyer Rd, at 6596 Campbell Blvd (NY-270), at 5286 Mapleton Rd (quite small), and at 5300 Lockport Rd. Please see map for directions.
We tried this trail after a day of rain. The portion that is not paved was impassable. Deep ruts of water and mud everywhere. Might be ok for a fat tired mountain bike but awful for cruisers. We quit and walked back. We will try again after a dry spell although the dirt portion is very bumpy.
