The Pinelands Nature Trail, Delaware's first National Recreation Trail, is a 1.5-mile loop that follows a gentle grade through pine forest and cranberry bogs on a loose sand surface. Old artillery bunkers from World War II can be found along the way.
The trail links both directly and via connector trails to the paved Cape Henlopen State Park Bike Loop, which provides access to many of the park's features, such as the Great Dune and Fort Miles Historic Area.
To access Cape Henlopen State Park from downtown Lewes, Delaware, follow Savannah Road and signs for the Lewes Terminal that provides ferry trips to Cape May, New Jersey. Turn right on Cape Henlopen Drive and follow it to the park entrance. There is a $10 park entry fee for automobiles (in-state drivers pay $5). Parking is available at the campground and Fort Miles Historic Area.
The path is as described. Pine needle paths, flat, and a new raised walkway over some marshy areas was added in 2020. Dogs are not allowed. A nice shady walk for the most part.
