Putnam Nature Trail Description

The Putnam Nature Trail begins in Greencastle, the home of DePauw University. The trail is part of the National Road Heritage Trail (NRHT), a proposed 150-mile trail across Indiana along the former corridor of the Pennsylvania and Vandalia railroads. There are plans to build a trail along Veterans Memorial Hwy to connect the Putnam Nature Trail to the Vandalia Trail, which is also part of the NRHT.

The trail is entirely forested. There are no amenities along the route, but trail users can enjoy the natural beauty of the area. After 0.8 miles, there is a gap where the trail meets an active railroad. The second section of the trail starts on the other side of the railroad and runs 2.6 miles before ending at a trailhead surrounded by farms.

Parking and Trail Access

Parking for the north section of the trail is available at the People's Pathway Putnam Nature Trailhead at 1295 S Jackson St. Parking for the south section is available at the Putnam Nature Trail CR 150 W Trailhead (3168 Cement Plant Rd) and at the Deer Creek Fish & Wildlife Parking Lot (5213 S County Rd 300 W).

Putnam Nature Trail Reviews

Short but shady trail

Very nice wooded trail. There is a gap between the first .8 miles and the second leg which is 2.6 miles long. It appears that some have bridged the gap by walking along the railroad tracks.
