Ridgeway Trail Description

The Ridgeway Trail skirts the banks of Willseyville Creek along the abandoned rail bed of the Delaware & Lackawanna Railroad and the former Lehigh Valley Railroad. From south Willseyville the trail heads north into Tomkins County and ends at Ridgeway Road. The level trail is used by mountain bikers and hikers, and snowmobiles are permitted in winter. Follow the white blazes since many side trails cross the Ridgeway Trail.

Parking and Trail Access

There's parking just off the Ridgeway Road end. Look for the Finger Lakes Trail sign where the power line crosses the road (near Coddington Road). You can also park at the southern terminus in Willseyville.

Ridgeway Trail Reviews

not impressed

Overgrown badly.

Awesome walk with the kids and dog

We had a terrific walk this summer afternoon. The trail was terrific and an easy flat walk. We walked for about 2 hours and saw many interesting things. We saw numerous butterflies, flowers, berries, and a heron. I wish we lived closer. This would be a repeat.

We did not encounter any ticks, but we were wearing bug repellent.

Beautiful, loads of birds, but O.M.G. THE TICKS!

We hiked this trail in April of 2014 - it's beautiful - runs right next to a big pond with loads of birds. Must be a huge stopping spot for spring migrating birds, they were everywhere - zipping around feeding mid air, in the trees next to the trail. It was lovely!

It's quite in the middle of nowhere, so hiking you'll most likely have it to yourself. We suspect it gets used by snowmobiles mostly, so beware in the winter.

The trail got lost about 2 miles in - it was flooded by the swamp and we weren't able to see where it went after that. So we turned around, but that was a fine distance for an afternoon hike.

On the way back we discovered, to our dismay, that even though we stayed on the nice wide trail, we were COVERED in ticks. By the time we de-ticked ourselves and our three dogs, we counted over 50 (FIFTY) ticks. It was awful! So load up on that bug spray and tick prevention if you go. It really is a beautiful spot.

off the beaten path

We walked half the trail today (5/20/2012), from Ridgeway to White Church and back. The trail goes through a beautiful scenic valley and passes by a sizeable swamp. It's a bit overgrown, which blocks most of the views. The view would be better in the fall, perhaps. The trail is pocked with large puddles that you have to sidestep around, but passable. Seems like it is mostly used for snowmobiling and atv riding (judging by the tracks). We saw no one else out there in the 2 hours we were there. It takes you deep into nature, and is definitely the path less traveled which makes it 4 stars for me. Bring insect repellant for the warmer months. Happy trails!
