Ringgold Trailway Description

The Ringgold Trailway connects the eastern edge of the small city of Mount Ayr with Poe Hollow County Park, a little less than 2 miles away. The trail was built on a former railroad right-of-way, and a caboose rests at the western end of the trail as a reminder of this fact. The Ringgold Trailway is surrounded by dense tree cover for its entire route. Be sure to check out Poe Hollow County Park, which is a popular recreational area in southern Iowa.

Motor vehicles are prohibited along the entire length of the trail.

Parking and Trail Access

There is a gravel parking lot located at the Ringgold Trailway's western endpoint in Mount Ayr off of US 169. Another small gravel lot is located at the trail's eastern endpoint on County Road P54. Alternatively, park at Poe Hollow County Park on State Route 2 and take a short walk or ride to the Ringgold Trailway.

Now all asphalt but add the Poh Hollow park loop for a scenic hike

The entire 2 mile rail trail is asphalt and very easy grade. You can take the Poh Hollow Park trail for some more adventurous hiking. Smooth wide grass path with some good hill terrain. Can also add in Trace Dragoon Nature Center for a nice informational trail. I’m guessing it adds about a mile.

Change in surface

"The Ringgold Conservation Commission has recently ""updated"" the surface of the first mile on the trailway with asphalt. It's not as much fun for me personally, but that has helped increase traffic on the trail, which is the point of trails in the first place, right?

It's a good quick spin; flat, shaded, etc. Watch out for the pedestrians the first mile, and the deer the second- I spotted three on my last trip, and they didn't get worried until I was within @90 feet. "
