Roger F. Snyder Greenway

The Roger F. Snyder Greenway is an ambitious project to create a citywide trail system in Albemarle, North Carolina. A portion of the trail is open for use, including two disconnected segments on a former Norfolk Southern Railway corridor. The project is named for a former mayor of Albemarle who secured funding for the popular greenway.

The trail connects residents of Albemarle with the city’s downtown. A segment along US 52 leads to Don B. Montgomery Memorial Park, which features the home playing field for Stanly County’s American Legion Baseball team. The trail winds through the park, ultimately following scenic Little Long Creek south to W. Main Street.

Parking and Trail Access

Parking for the Roger F. Snyder Greenway is available at Don B. Montgomery Memorial Park(500 N. US 52) and at a trailhead at the western end of Glenn Street.

The trail is ok but as another reviewer mentioned it's nothing to get excited about, particularly for cyclists. However, I chose to move to Albemarle partly for the many miles of sidewalks. You can walk or run for miles here if you want and never cross the same route. The city is finally recognizing this asset and marking various routes for newcomers. Come see us!

We parked at the city park as suggested, rode south to Main St then doubled back and along US 52 to Salisbury Ave (using the wide paved path made, bumpy by tree roots). After crossing the train tracks we explored and went north across Salisbury to the end of the greenway. This section is not on the trail map since it is very difficult (the gravel is loose so we parked and walked much of that section). Turning south from Salisbury is the best part of the ride as it's an old rail bed and is well paved. Near the middle of that leg is the Glenn St parking, accessed by a walking ramp.
