Route 273 Multi-Use Trail Description

The Route 273 Multi-Use Trail provides a convenient link between the popular New Castle Farmers Market site and the residential core of the coastal town. The asphalt sidepath runs for over a mile on the northern side of Frenchtown Road; while the roadway doesn't make for the prettiest trail companion, there are relatively few road crossings along the route thanks to the lands of the Historic Penn Farm that comprise the northern border of the trail.

On the western end, the trail ends at the parking lot for the farmers market complex, which offers a wide variety of food and shopping options from Thursdays to Sundays. The eastern end of the trail forms a junction with the Jack A. Markell Trail, one of the state's premier rail-trails, which runs north through scenic marshlands into Wilmington.

Parking and Trail Access

Parking is available at the lot next to the Jack A. Markell Trail, north of Delaware Street by the elementary school in New Castle. Parking is also available at the western end - be sure to follow any posted signs and regulations. DART buses also provide service along the trail route; consult with their website for routes and schedules.
