Ruth Bascom Riverbank Path System Description

The Ruth Bascom Riverbank Path System is a collection of interconnected trails lining the Willamette River in Eugene. The trails run on both sides of the river, weaving through parks, open space, industrial areas and residential neighborhoods.

The system consists of 4 main trails (North Bank Trail, South Bank Trail, East Bank Trail and West Bank Trail), as well as a number of local connecting paths. Five bike/ped bridges allow for scenic loops of a variety of distances.

The trail system is named after Ruth Bascom, the first female mayor of Eugene and a tireless advocate for biking and walking.

North Bank Path (~5 miles)

This section of the trail system runs for over 5 miles along the northeast branch of the river through Alton Baker Park, Whilamut Natural Area, Eastgate Woodlands, West D St. Greenway, and Island Park. Alton Baker Park is an impressive park featuring a Community Garden, Disc Golf Course, Pond, BMX tracks, and dog park.

South Bank Path (~4.5 miles)

This section of trail runs along the southeast portion of the Willamette River through Skinner Butte and Maurie Jacobs Park.

East Bank Path (~2.5 miles)

This section of the trail runs along the northeastern portion of the trail that passes by Delta Ponds Park and connects to the West Bank Path via. the Owosso Ped/Bike Bridge.

West Bank Path (~2 miles)

This portion of trail runs along the northwestern portion of the trail and passes through Heron Slough, West Bank, Rasor Park and connects to the East Bank Path via. the Owosso Ped/Bike Bridge.

A number of other sidepaths and connector trails make up this trail system. See the TrailLink Map for all information.

Akin to Portland’s Esplanade

Nice urban ride!

Great trail

We rode our recumbent trikes from Alton Baker park south, across the river and north to the last bridge and back to the park. We saw lots of juvenile Canada geese and several blue herons. Trail is easy and well maintained, lots of parks on both sides of the river with restroom access. The loop was about 13 miles and we rode two hours at a very leisurely pace with stops. Lovely day!

Nice Trail System

I rode this trail a couple weeks ago. It is fine. When we lived in Eugene I rode it a lot. I’ve not explored the Springfield part (east of I-5). It can be a bit crowded, so is better suited for a mountain bike and not my LWB recumbent.

Well Maintained Greenway

We rode this trail on June 22, it was quite busy for a weekday. However, it is near the university and I suspect used by students and facility. The trail is in good condition. However, it has a number of spurs and it could use better directional information. However, it was an enjoyable ride.

A good restaurant, called McMenamins North Bank is on the north side of the river and we strongly recommend it.
