Sabercat Creek Trail Description

The Sabercat Creek Trail can be found along its tree-lined namesake waterway in the Mission San Jose community of Fremont, a coastal California city off the San Francisco Bay. The 2-mile paved pathway runs through a former paleontological dig site, where thousands of fossil specimens have been collected, including mammoths, saber-toothed cats, wolves, giant sloths and cave bears. Near its eastern end, Mission San Jose Park offers restrooms, picnic tables, a playground and athletic facilities.

Parking and Trail Access

Parking is available in Old Mission Park (1000 Pine Street) on the eastern end of the trail. From the parking lot, take the park's pathway up to Pine Street and follow the street northeast to reach the entrance to the trail less than a quarter of a mile away (between Excelso Drive and Tonica Road).

Sabercat Creek Trail Reviews

bumpy for skating

This trail is a good length for a stroll. It is hilly and scenic. It is in a valley. The trail is asphalt with cracks sealed with tar. Except for the east end, which is concrete and very wide. I don’t recommend it for skating because it is rough and short. Also the hill at the west end near the bathrooms/parking is very steep.

Creek, and signboards along the way to describe ancient history right on the spot.
